About Exfoliated Vermiculite

Exfoliated vermiculite is a lightweight, porous, and highly absorbent material created from the natural mineral vermiculite. The "exfoliation" process is a key step that transforms the raw, dense mineral into a much larger, more useful product.

The Exfoliation Process

Exfoliation is the process of rapidly heating raw vermiculite flakes to a temperature of around 1000C (1832F). The vermiculite mineral has water molecules trapped between its layered silicate sheets. When heated, these water molecules turn into steam, and the pressure from the steam forces the layers to expand and separate. This expansion can increase the volume of the vermiculite by up to 20 times its original size, giving it a distinctive accordion-like or worm-like shape.

This process results in a very low-density, sterile, and fire-resistant material with a large number of microscopic air pockets.
