Exfoliated vermiculite powder is a fine-grained, processed form of the natural mineral vermiculite, created through a heat-treating process called "exfoliation." This process causes the minerals layered structure to expand dramatically, resulting in a lightweight, porous material. The expanded material is then ground into a powder, offering the same beneficial properties as the larger granules but in a form suitable for different applications.

The Manufacturing Process

1. Mining: Raw vermiculite, a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral, is mined from deposits around the world. It appears as flat, shiny flakes.

2. Exfoliation: The raw flakes are heated rapidly to high temperatures (around 1000C / 1832F). The water trapped between the minerals layers turns to steam, forcing the layers to separate and expand. This "popping" process can increase the volume of the vermiculite by up to 20 times its original size, giving it a characteristic worm-like or accordion-like shape.

3. Milling/Grinding: The exfoliated vermiculite is then ground into a fine powder. This process can be controlled to produce different grades of powder, from a fine dust to a more granular consistency.
